Seung Ho
I want to meet with things I am not capable of and go challenge myself
Q. What is your thought about standing on the stage as the lead Kang Hyun Woo in the musical “Gwanghwamun Sonata”?
At the beginning I was worried that reaction would be slow because the Japanese subtitles came out beside the stage, but when people from a wide range of age groups sympathized with us and even shed tears, I was really overwhelmed with emotion. Out of about 150 performances I appeared 17 times and G.O 20 times, but because both of us tried doing musical for the first time, even if it was a little, if we had time we practiced together, and it became something like a part of our lives. We worked as hard as possible to get rid of the appearances we always had and associate with the perfect reality in the musical.

Q. Do you want to try doing musical again in the future?
I want to. It may be good to even try a bad guy role this time. I think I want to try something I myself am not capable of and learn more and more things.

Q. During the event in February even all the members say that a bright Seungho who was different than usual was seen in Japan…?
I didn’t want to lie to the fans, and I didn’t want to do such things as playing the hypocrite and pretending to be cool forcibly. So, I may have looked a bit quiet so far, but because they are the fans who always support us, and when we’ve already had a comfortable relation now I think freely…(laugh) I’m thinking I’ll steadily show my original self in front of the fans.

G.O
I was able to discover a new self in the musical
Q. What is your thought about standing on the stage as the lead Kang Hyun Woo in the musical “Gwanghwamun Sonata”?
I tried as hard as I could, felt the pleasure of going on the stage, and was able to discover a self different from before. I want to try playing Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar” some day. All the characters of this piece of work have mustache. Mustache is good. I am actually a mustache mania… (laugh). So I definitely want to be given a role that overflows with charisma like that.

Q. You enthusiastically played an agent of the cyber investigation team in “Phantom”. What is your thought about starring in the drama?
Senior Kwak Do Won who played Kwon Hyuk Joo looked over my acting very carefully for me. It was my start as an actor, but he really became my strength, and thanks to the seniors the stress on my shoulders was removed and I was able to deal with my acting.

Q. What is your thought on trying out the unit “Dramatic Blue” with BEAST’s Yang Yoseob, 2AM’s Jokwon, INFINITE’s Woohyun and TEENTOP’s Niel on SBS Gayo Daejun?
It was joined together by the main vocal of various groups, so it was very interesting, and to me it was a new experience. When all 5 members put on the blue suit we became looking like the anime “Smurf.” Hahaha (laugh).

Actor and singer, I have 2 professions
Q. You are the main lead of the movie “Actor Is An Actor,” but what is difficult in acting?
Everyday was always a new challenge during the filming, but the seniors who starred in the movie with me treated me with love and I had no difficulties at all.

Q. How is the filming of the drama “IRIS2″ that you are starring in now?
I’m originally shy of strangers, and I was worried about what would be the nice way for an idol like me to get along with the actors, but when I went to the filming site that was only my overanxiety and it was totally fine. At the filming site I’m always together with BEAST’s Yoon Doojoon. We also go to the bathroom together, talk about different things, and receive advice on acting… Oh, it’s weird to go to the bathroom with a male colleague, isn’t it…? No look, beside filming it’s not the atmosphere where you can talk, so when we don’t go to an independent space like the bathroom, we are quite quite and don’t have a chance to talk (laugh).

Q. Is there any difference between being an artist and an actor?
There’s no difference. In my case, actor and singer, I think both of them are my own profession. Maybe because on the stage I utilize what I learned through acting, with that kind of meaning I might be having the strong point of being able to express 2 charms at the same time.

First time trying drama, I want to learn different things
Q. You are playing the lead role in the drama “Nail Shop PARIS,” but what is your current state of mind?
I was under great pressure at the beginning. However, there are 4 main characters including me and it’s not the 1top formation* that has only me, so contrarily I’m grateful. The atmosphere at the filming site is also good and fun! I was like dying when I was wearing spring clothing at the filming location in midwinter, though (laugh). It was my first time, so I’m working as hard as possible with an attitude of learning different things.

Q. How do you spend the filming breaks with your co-star KARA’s Gyuri?
We share candies (laugh). We always share our food. As we also often talk about the music industry and she would worry about me and say “is there anything difficult?” she is a very nice senior.

Q. How was the reaction around you when it was decided that you would be in a drama?
My elder sister (2NE1′s DARA) was so happy. It seems like my elder sister also has the thought of wanting to do acting, and she congratulated me that her own younger brother has come to take the challenge of an actor with her. I don’t live with my members, so although we can’t do the monitoring together… Honestly a lot of times we are also busy to the point that we don’t even have time to watch TV as well, so we try to check each other’s programs when we have time.

Q. What was the most difficult thing in “Law of the Jungle in Amazon”?
It’s a place where you have to be conscious that you’re exposed to danger all the time, so I was mentally tired. We couldn’t take our meals, if it rained when we were sleeping we couldn’t sleep while being struck by the rain, and 1 day was like 1 year… However, it became a really good experience. I’m thankful that water comes out from the tap, I’m also thankful that there’s food, and I learned a lot of things.

Q. You are raising a snake and lizard, but what is the charm of that?
I’ve been liking reptiles since I was little. At the beginning they were all scary, but when I got used to them they were cute and I fell for them. Reptiles are extremely clean animals. Aren’t they interesting, marvelous and cute! As for snakes I’ve raised a tape snake and Boa constrictor. I was also raising 3 lizards, but they all died… Now I live with 2 animals in total, 1 snake and 1 alligator that is being raised by G.O hyung.

Q. What do you want to try in the future?
It’s singing. I haven’t sung for 5~6 years. Rapping has been fun and I’ve been thinking about rapping only so far, but lately I’ve come to think that I want to try singing.

Q. When living in the dorm, is there any task that is entrusted to you (>w<)? Please tell us the good and bad of your dorm life.
Seungho. Not all the members live in the dorm, so although basically nothing was fixed in particular, it seems that each of us are sharing and doing the tasks well ourselves.
Q. Like the lyrics of “MONA LISA,” what would you do if your girlfriend seemed to drift apart from yourself?
G.O. I don’t know what I would do concretely, but so as not to regret that moment, I think I would express all my feelings honestly. Lee Joon. If it was still before my girlfriend was leaving me, I think it’s important to talk to her first. I would talk to her regardless.
Q. What kind of date does Joon want to do? (·w·)
Seeing that I’m not able to have a girlfriend this is really… (laugh). I think I’ll probably try the typical course that normal lovers do? It seems that dating would be difficult under the condition that people recognize my face, so I think I want to consider what the occasion may demand according to the person I date (laugh).
Q. What Japanese stuff have you been interested in lately?
G.O. I think it’s mustache? I often see stuff with mustache as the motif from female clothing, bags and accessories and I’m interested in it. It’s unique.
Q. As for your participation in the snow festival in Hokkaido, it seems that you had a hard time traveling. Please tell us the episode of that time.
Cheondung. We went to Chitose Airport by plane, but the weather was so bad that we couldn’t land and returned to Haneda Airport temporarily. After that, we went to the Shinkansen station by taxi, took the Shinkansen, went to the airport again by taxi, and took the plane… We used all the means of transport we could and reached Sapporo anyhow. It was really terrible… (laugh).
Q. When you seem to be disheartened, what gives you strength the most?
Mir. It’s fans’ cheering. No matter how hard the case is, when I hear all the fans’ voice my strength gushes out.
Q. G.O, do you not grow your mustache anymore? Mustache G.O is quite popular in Japan!!
Surprisingly lots of people like Mustache G.O. When people who had no interest in K-POP at all got to know MBLAQ after they saw the picture of me with mustache and came to listen to K-POP, my friend in Japan told me about it and I was happy. I’m thinking if I should grow it again.
Q. Is there any spot in Seoul that you recommend?
Lee Joon. It’s Hangang Park. Their leisure boat is also famous, and although it doesn’t have an address, when you order food delivery they deliver chicken and pizza to you correctly. Eating delivery food while sitting in the leather seat and looking at Han River is more fun than having a lunch box. If you come to Korea, please definitely try it!
Q. When is the time when you thought that it was good to have your members?
Mir. It’s now (laugh). I’m happy because we’re always together~
Q. Seungho oppa! I’m also troubled by dark circles, but is there any good cosmetic recommended by Seungho that removes dark circles?
I’ve tried a lot of things, but the best is to sleep well. You can’t completely get rid of them, so please give up that hope (laugh). It’s important to keep it up and make an effort. It’s often that one is worried about his physical condition when the dark circles are serious, but I don’t have any stress or anything like that at all~
Q. Seungho, you are always licking candy during fansigning, but what candy flavor do you like the most?
I like those with refreshing fruit flavor like orange and peach flavor. Basically I like round candies.
Q. Cheondung, how long have you practiced nail art for the drama? Do you do your own nails, too?
I learned it with the pace of 3 days a week for about 2~3 weeks. My level has come to the extent of putting flower patterns on acrylic, but it doesn’t suit me (laugh). I don’t do my nails myself, but if I have a girlfriend I want to do it for her. As for color gold is good. Since gold is expensive, I like gold (laugh).
Q. Is there any [important] point when you are doing body training?
Seungho. It’s also not good to over-exercise. You have to proceed with an exercise method that suits your own physical strength at the moment and diet at the same time, and it’s important to coordinate the muscles that must be developed and those that must not. It’s not good to overdo anything, so please be careful~
Q. Among the hair styles you have done so far which one is your favorite?
G.O. It’s my current hair style. Personally I’m pleased with all the hair styles I’ve had so far, but I care about what all the fans think. How is it~?

Cheondung. Please call me “oppa.”
Q. Do you like girls older or younger than you? Also, as for hair style, do you like girls with short or long hair?
Seungho. Hair style doesn’t matter for both younger and older. I like everyone provided that she likes me!

Seungho. I’m really thankful that you support us and are waiting for us. We will show you songs and performances that are cooler than how much we have kept you waiting for. G.O. Whenever we wanted to get out a smile somehow from Mir with a cool expression, the staff would call his name “Mir-ya~!” repeatedly like crazy. Since that look was funny, Mir also burst into laughter without thinking (laugh).

Thunder: ”I do weight training. I have my own trainer from a year ago.”

Thunder: ”Vitamins. And my mother prepares Korean Medicine for me.”

Thunder: ”I look for something new. I go on to the Internet and search. I check out YouTube often, and I watch movies I have seen once again.”

Q. If your girlfriend feels down, how would you make her feel better? And if you are feeling down, how would you want your girlfriend to make you feel better?
Thunder: ”I only can try to show her my aegyo. And I will be happy if she tries to show some aegyo for me when I feel down.”

Thunder: “Blue. It is cold color, but at the same time, I think blue is sexy color.”
Q: How many hours do you usually sleep? What time do you get up and go to bed?
Thunder: “It is so irregular, there is no set time.”

Newly Reborn “MONA LISA”

MBLAQ, who debuted in Japan with “Your Luv” in 2011, will resume their activities in this Spring in Japan for the first time in 1 year and 5 months! The song they chose for their 1st shot of comeback after a long time is the Japanese version of “MONA LISA.”
Seungho “We’ve done promotion with this song in Korea, but when it’s changed into Japanese the atmosphere is also different that I feel like revealing a new song. The lyrics and MV are also different, so please try to feel the differences from the original!”
Cheondung “With the lyrics changed into Japanese, I feel a sense of gentleness showing in the content. Or perhaps I should say it has a gentler feeling than the atmosphere of the original song…”
Mir “We have released 2 Japanese singles so far, but didn’t the song this time turn out to be the most natural? Since the rap was also in Japanese it was difficult, but I did my best!”
G.O “I also had fun doing the recording. The Japanese staff came to Korea for us that we were able to do it at ease in an environment where we could relax, and personally it was very easy to sing.”

Cheondung “We filmed it at an underground parking lot, but actually the filming day was the coldest day in this winter in Korea! It was super cold! I filmed it while shaking, but it turned out to be pretty cool. It was cold and my body was stiff, so conversely it might have become a good atmosphere that had a sense of nervousness (laugh).”

Seungho “We’ve been having a lot of solo activities lately, and for us to stand on the stage and sing together in 5 after a long time was in itself enjoyable. The thing that was requested the most was “please show your aegyo”, but really…they were like appearing in my dream (laugh).”
Mir “At the question board event, someone wrote “I want to be your pet snake (laugh).” The idea of a human being wanting to be a snake was so interesting and impressive.”
—–What do you want to do together with your fans in Japan?
Mir “Dome tour. I want to go to all the big live venues of Japan! I want the members and fans to taste the moving moments together.”
G.O “Not just live, but I also wish there will be more events where we can get close to all the fans. I want to have meetings like the “MONA LISA -Japanese Version-” purchaser event in May, too.”

Although it has been obscured a lot by the appearance of many gifted people with talents within the last few years, the prejudice against idols still remains as before. Programs with idols as the lead also receive such skewed attention. The thought that they will follow as they are told without subjectivity, the thought that they will just stop their sloppy pretense because of their overseas activities and domestic events and their position of being swung around in tight schedules, these are the sort of stereotype I am talking about. On top of that, as they have so much work that has to be settled and taken care of, it is expected that the production team side has agonized parts that they suffer in silence, and if seeing it from the broadcasting networks’ point of view it may feel like chicken ribs*. If they are to shut their eyes tight and abandon the outward appearances, they will waste the group of fans that shows unlimited interest, but if in reality they work together and tackle it, they have more than one or two things that give them a headache. Perhaps because those factors are at work extensively, when it comes to idol programs only a few of them have done well.

Indeed, even if I review my memory that each fan watches and enjoys them, it is not always the case where they are even well-known to the masses like 2PM’s “Idol Army.” Therefore MBC every1 MBLAQ’s “Idol Manager” also feels like a program made for fans and the like in general and I did not pay much attention to it at the beginning. But watching it one episode after another I gradually changed my view. Idol group MBLAQ who has been into their 4th year after debut, unlike various reality programs they have done since their first appearance on Mnet in 2009 until now. have started leading programs actively. Even last week alone was like that. They wrote songs on the spot and added lyrics to them, as well as had a jam concert and had fun together. Where did the change come from? Luckily I went to find them in person at the shooting scene where they were in the midst of being absorbed in learning acting and tried to get my question answered.

JSH: Now that I think about it, honestly the first episode was a bit regretful. Despite going over to Japan and being at a surprising number of overseas locations(?), it looks like it couldn’t fully draw out MBLAQ’s charm. However, you restored your energy since the 3rd and 4th episode, and then you found the right key since the best friend special in the 5th episode, right? How did “Idol Manager” become a plan, by the way? Because I’m informed and while everyone is hard to control, I avoid idols. (laugh)

PD Ko: Isn’t recklessness more interesting instead? MBLAQ is not like that. Actually I don’t know much about idols. The proper coordination with MBLAQ and Park Kyung Lim-ssi’s role are big. We ended up doing it together with Kyung Lim-ssi because MBLAQ members wanted her. She knows them the best and always knows how to take good care of them, so they said let’s do it with her. They also have plenty of talk outside of the broadcast. I’m really pleased with the current work where I respect their opinions and bring out their ideas. The predecessor of this program is MBC every1 “Idol Maid.” While upgrading from “Maid” to “Manager” we worried a lot about how we should fuse the “manager role” into the program. After exchanging many opinions, we drew a conclusion to do it by getting familiar through motives and trying to foster growing idols like the idol we can approach, “g.o.d’s Baby Diary.”

JSH: I suppose it’s not easy to work with idols. If their schedules overlap adjusting them is hard, and they ended up dropping out because of individual activities.

PD Ko: Actually Lee Joon-gun is absent today. It’s sad but it’s the inevitable part. Though I understand, it’s because he’s currently participating in many programs. I really hope we all do it together, but if we gain recognition from the part that has a bit more weight I believe that synergy effect will probably come to us as well. Perhaps because of his tight schedules Lee Joon-gun got sick a lot halfway through. At those times even while he was getting a Ringer** [injection] I let him go to get some rest. It’s because we are a family. Our original plan was that MBLAQ’s new album was scheduled to come out at the end of September or the beginning of October. I wanted to cover a lot of musical parts including the course of their album preparation. Because it’s “Manager,” once the album came out I would be able to show the real manager activities. But while the album release was postponed, I changed the details. I discussed that point a lot with the members. All of them are obedient and kind but their subjectivity is clear. It was beyond my imagination.

JSH: But why does their album keep getting delayed?

PD Ko: I don’t know very well but there must be internal and external reasons. I know it will come out early next year. They have plans to advance into Japan as well. Due to the album release being delayed the items that I planned in the beginning collapsed, so I was flustered.

JSH: Mainly which parts of the members are appealing?

PD Ko: I want to move one step forward from the many variety shows that have already been done and show the musicality they themselves have. I was worried that it would only flow to the entertaining side.

JSH: After discussing with each other you built it one by one.

They quickly got the mindset of a production team.

PD Ko: I especially discuss with Seungho and G.O a lot. While we started with a different concept, after discussion we went into modification. It’s not an idle talk but we all work hard. There were cases where the members could just go with the script when they were given the plot proposal, but they said let’s go with the truth instead. Before we knew it they did not remain in being the performers but became in the position of the makers. They have already fully shown their appaerances of exchanging laughter or chatting with each other somewhere else as well, so now it’s in the shape of wanting to show their new appearance. Honestly at the beginning I have a bit of expectation for Joonie who gained recognition through variety shows on terrestrial networks. But since Joonie is often absent, I realized that I gave many roles to Mir and G.O. Scenes that are outside of my expectations are coming out.

JSH: Even just from what I see today G.O-gun is doing various roles. He operates the slate and organizes his own lines.

G.O: The thought of wanting to do it like that simply comes out. First of all, it’s possible because I’m comfortable with Kyung Lim noona. I can’t go this far at other places. If the variety shows all this time have the impression of being led by the production team I now want to be greedy. You know it’s our program. Although it can be seen as ill-mannered, I have a lot of discussion with the production team and also make suggestions. If it looks like there are parts different from the discussion and something go wrong I say it. It’s because I want to show the appearance that we are developing something including our musical parts rather than just our appearance of comfortably having fun. Actually if you watch the recording for a while, slang and secret language pop out and we even fool around. Because I believe they will understand and edit it out for me, I can do it with ease. I don’t want to hold my back without doing my best and then regret it after I go home.

PD Ko: No matter we say how interesting it is at the shooting site, in our own position as well as the viewers and fans’ if we make a judgement that it’s a minus for each other we edit it out. Even if we may create issues we must not break our trust. I must have come to have feelings of a hyung. But there were cases where people took out only one scene or one phrase through press releases only and took issue with it without watching the entire episode. It’s sad at such times.

JSH: They say that when not long ago the production team of KBS2 “Invincible Youth Season 2″ might be preparing a male idol special Mir was actively recommended. Mir-gun, you’re greedy for variety, right?

Mir: It’s much welcome! I’d really like to take the challenge of going around countryside or outdoor shooting like “1 Night 2 Days.” Since no matter what “Idol Manager” is a program that has our name on it, our sense of responsibility is different. To be honest I also slightly take care of my image on other programs. But because here it has our name on it, I feel much more that “I’ll have to completely put myself aside.” If we think about the fans who tune in the channel to watch us we have to be like that.

JSH: You’ve done a lot of reality programs, right? But lately I’ve got a feeling that you’ve grown even more. The improvement, do all of you know?

Seungho: It’s not so much that we improved all of a sudden, rather I bet we are getting better step by step. The process accumulates one after another. As we are doing it together with people whom we are originally comfortable with, we can show our real appearances and it’s good. Isn’t sincerity the priorty of variety shows? I think people look at it nicely because it’s a variety show where we can have a good time.
