120117 [NEWS] Rain Requests Change of Assignment to the Front

Singer-actor Rain whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon has requested a change of assignment to the front lines from his current duty at the Defense Media Agency.

A close friend of Rain told Korean news agencies, including Yonhap that he has asked his superiors to be transferred to the front lines for the remainder of his military service. Rain has seven more months left of his mandatory military duty.

Rain was under probation for seven days from January 8 for violating the decree on military service by meeting his girlfriend actress Kim Tae-hee when he was out of the military post on an official military duty.

According to the ministry, Rain met actress Kim Tae-hee on November 23, December 2 and December 7, days when he was supposed to perform official duties. He had reported to his unit that he needed to go out of the post to practice choreography and a new song.

Ministry officials also stated that the singer/actor violated another part of the regulation by not wearing the army cap off-post.

Since military service is an extremely sensitive social issue in Korea, many Internet users here expressed their sense outrage and the incident became a huge controversy about entertainment soldiers’ special privileges.

Rain’s acquaintance added, “Rain already expressed a wish to serve at the front and he is waiting for the approval from the Korean Ministry of Defense.”
