121212 [NEWS] [Recap: The Romantic & Idol] 5th Date - “When we were together, I felt like he was thinking about someone else”

It’s Day Three on Jeju Island, where eight idol stars have been whisked away for a romantic getaway, and in the wake of Nam Ji Hyun and Hyung Sik’s meant-to-be moment from the previous episode, it’s time to find out whom the remaining idols will link up with during the clothing shuffle.

(If you missed the first few episodes, have no fear because we have you covered with recaps!)

Before the reveal, we’re given a little more insight into the girls’ feelings about the boys and a few hints about which shirt belongs to who.

“I went to the department store myself and picked it. It’s just neat. I like simple things,” says Seung Ah when describing the shirt she picked before adding of her hopes to be matched up with JB, “Still, I want to meet [with JB] at least one more time.”

“I want it to be one of the two people I’ve been thinking about,” says Jei referring to her previous partners Jun.K and JB when asked who she hopes picked her shirt.

Interestingly enough, however, Jei also says with a laugh, “[I noticed] Mir really likes comfortable things. Yesterday on the bus too, he kept trying to sleep. I do have thoughts of ‘No, really?’”

Uh oh. Does this mean… All we’re saying is that starchy denim button-ups, which Jun.K and JB each snatched up, don’t necessarily scream comfort. But that hoodie Mir picked sure does…

When the staff member asks, “Would you prefer that Mir didn’t pick yours?” Jei answers with a sheepish laugh, “Yes.”

If only she was that sure about her feelings for Jun.K and JB.

“I was going to pick something loud, but then I thought it might be nice [for the guy] to look neat and smart,” says Hyejeong. “Everyone was saying Hyung Sik oppa would look good in it. I think if he wore it, he’d look cool.”

Is Hyejeong jumping ship?

Meanwhile, when asked how she’d feel if Hyung Sik is paired with another girl, Nam Ji Hyun says, “I don’t think I’d feel good about it.”

We’re then given a refresher on the boys’ picks before we return to the lawn, where the girls are waiting for the boys to make their grand entrance.

But from last week’s episode, we know that Nam Ji Hyun doesn’t have to worry about seeing Hyung Sik with another girl as the two found each other back in each other’s arms after the clothing shuffle.

Destiny? At this point, we’re going to assume that even gravity can’t keep these two apart.

But how do Hyung Sik and Nam Ji Hyun explain it? They can’t. Really. They tried.

“The inexplicable happened,” says Hyung Sik. “I’ve come to accept it. There’s no way…I didn’t think we’d meet for the third time.”

Nam Ji Hyun says, “But seriously…this…no, never mind.”

Okay, let’s try this again one more time.

“The more we meet, and because I don’t feel like we’re not a good match, that’s the problem,” adds Ji Hyun.

Um, destiny it is...

We’re back on the lawn as frantic violin playing causes our hearts to race, signaling that another boy is about to make his grand entrance.

After dillydallying, the next boy pops out of the guest house and it’s none other than JB in his denim shirt.

Seung Ah asks, “Whose do you think it is?” to which JB answers, “I don’t know whose mine is.”

“It looks good on you,” says Seung Ah and Jei adds, “I think everyone found what looks best on them.”

Seung Ah then jumps up and says, “Let’s go. It’s nuna” as she walks towards JB, who drops his head. Someone needs to work on his poker face.

“It seemed like JB didn’t like it,” says Seung Ah in her private interview of the moment. “It was chaos. Still, I think I would’ve met with JB. I thought, ‘Our meeting couldn’t be helped.’”

The couple takes off, and upon running into Hyung Sik and Ji Hyun, Seung Ah notes with an air of excitement that she and JB are also a “first meeting” couple, having been matched up on their first date, before adding, “It’s so weird.”

Although JB was unable to hide his disappointment at the turn of events, he and Seung Ah, at least, look like a cute couple in their matching denim jackets. Wait a minute… Jei is wearing a hoodie… Minor detail or major coincidence? Oh, how desperately we hope it’s the latter. For Jei’s sake.

We’re then taken into the boys’ room, where Jun.K asks Mir whether he’s going to stick with Nam Ji Hyun or go to Hyejeong if he goes on a date with Hyejeong this round.

“I have to do it first,” says Mir. “If…I have no idea.”

And again, we’re reminded that we have to take things minute-by-minute with the boys. Sigh.

Jun.K and Mir are then told to come out together, and the remaining girls, Jei and Hyejeong, see who’s wearing their shirts.

The boys come out of the guesthouse looking like lost sheep as the girls play it cool, knowing now who their partners are.

Jun.K says he has no idea whose shirt he’s wearing, while Mir says, “Our guess is that this is Hyejeong’s” while pointing to his hoodie.

Hyejeong and Jei walk up to the boys and then Jun.K seems to have picked up on something as he glances at the girls and says “Ah, okay, okay.”

Still, the girls milk the fact that only they know who’s wearing their shirts for a few seconds longer and the boys stand around nervously, leading Jun.K to ask, “Wait, are you both Mir?”

Hyejeong finally puts an end to the boys’ misery, saying, “Huh? No, this is you,” before grabbing Jun.K’s arm with a laugh.

And we’re thrown another curveball as the one thing Jei hoped wouldn’t happen has happened. Another boy is thrown into Jei’s world.

But we’ll worry about that later as there are dates to be had, and we pan over to Jun.K and Hyejeong, the other denim jacket couple, who have wasted no time and are singing Gangnam Style at the top of their lungs.

The only thing that can distract them from doing the horse dance is, of course, the smell of food, and before we know it, Jun.K and Hyejeong are whipping up bibimbap for each other inside a restaurant.

Meanwhile, the mood is completely different over in Hyung Sik and Ji Hyun’s car (sorry if we seem a little off - it’s because we’re still recovering from the whiplash), where they are talking about how they think the show will turn out.

The conversation then turns to food (okay, we guess it’s not that different), as Ji Hyun talks about her signature rice pizza dish.

“It’s good,” says Ji Hyun. “I thought, ‘If the opportunity arises, I should make it for you,” to which Hyung Sik responds, “Make it for me.”

The two seem much more comfortable with one another at this point, and when Mr. Confident Hyung Sik, who has his arm slung over the seat, asks the cameraman, “Don’t we get along really well?” the cameraman responds, “You [two] seem like real lovers,” to which Hyung Sik says, “Well, I mean, now…”

Hyung Sik and Ji Hyun then take off on an exciting motorboat date, while we’re sitting at home wishing it were summer again.

“When Jei nuna came out, I was really happy,” says Mir. “As you know, she has the face that I prefer.”

Over in Jei and Mir’s car, however, the two have not said one word to each other.

If you didn’t believe in the power of music to heal awkward silences before, this scene will surely convince you.

Why so awkward, Mir?

“I was literally sweating,” says Mir. “With Seung Ah nuna I talked about everything, but with Jei nuna, I talked really carefully. I thought I was going to go crazy.”

We’ve never seen this side of Mir, and neither has Mir, apparently.

“If the four girls I’ve dated thus far see this, they might hit me,” adds Mir. “This is seriously the first time [I’ve acted like this].”

We pan back to the car, where Mir’s face is frozen in time. Then he finally breaks the silence by trying to make conversation…about the car speed.

During his private interview, Mir reveals, “When I was in the car with Seung Ah nuna, I would yell, ‘Woohoo, faster!’ drive over curbs and blast music, but today with Jei nuna, I would hit the break if I went over the speed limit even the slightest and even then I would press the break lightly with my toe.”

And Jei officially has Mir sprung. Ji Hyun, who? But the best part? Jei has done absolutely nothing. That’s the power of women for you.

Back in the car, Mir asks Jei why she’s still speaking formally to him, and when Jei asks if they want to start speaking informally to one another, Mir says that he can’t speak down to people who are older than him.

Are you sure about that, Mir?

We then cut to Mir yelling, “Ya!” or “You!” in Korean to Seung Ah. Thank you, PDs. Read our minds.

After hearing about what was running through Mir’s mind on the date, Jei finally reveals her first impression of the date in her private interview, saying “With Jun.K oppa, I was able to go on a romantic date, and even with JB, it felt like a date,” says Jei. “But with Mir, it still feels like I’m with my younger brother.”

But before we can even entertain the idea that this date is headed downhill, we cut to Jei’s interview later that night, where she says, “I think, of the three, this date was the most interesting and fun. Right now, I think [in terms of] the probability, Mir is higher.”

Wait. WHAT?!

Okay, rewind. Did we miss something?!

We’re on a boat now with the couple, and as far as we can tell, the two haven’t made great strides since the last scene. Mir and Jei even admit that the boat ride, although it was fun at first, is boring now. Then the couple hears the staff members making a ruckus on the other side of the boat, and Mir and Jei head over to see what all of the fuss is about.

And the date is saved…by a bunch of dolphins.

Dolphins are cute, but we’re not convinced that’s the reason behind Jei’s change apparent change of heart.

Meanwhile, in JB and Seung Ah’s car, JB can’t seem to get over the fact that he’s been paired with Seung Ah.

“How did we wind up together again?” wonders JB out loud, and Seung Ah says, “It’s weird. I didn’t even imagine [we’d wind up together].“

But JB makes it clear that his apparent shock at the turn of events is an expression of disappointment, not excitement, because he can’t stop talking about Jei, while Seung Ah says she’s glad that she hasn’t been paired with Mir and that Jei’s personality will have changed by the end of her date with Mir.

We thought Mir and Jei’s car ride was awkward, but little did we know what JB and Seung Ah’s car ride had in store for us.

“You really never imagined it’d be me?” asks Seung Ah.

“You were the ultimate [shock]. When you chose me during the halftime selection,” says JB.

Okay, it wasn’t that shocking JB.

“Oh, and Jei nuna. Jei nuna was the ultimate,” adds JB. “I thought Jei nuna would pick me.”

Then the date just keeps taking a turn for the worse every minute with every word JB says.

“Why didn’t Jei nuna pick me?”

“I think I’m going to have to talk to Jei nuna.”

“Right, right, right,” says Seung Ah.

Awk…ward.

The couple isn’t even on the actual date yet, but it’s doomed.

Where are the dolphins when you need them?

“Jei nuna…Ah, she’s a nuna I can’t read,” says JB.

Seriously, bring back the dolphins. Please.

The conversation doesn’t appear to be going anywhere else at this point, and Seung Ah gives in, asking, “So what did you and Jei talk about when you were with her?”

Meanwhile, JB can’t read the situation for what it is, and continues on about Jei.

“I don’t know if it’s because of the halftime selection, but I felt a little sorry for no reason. [I thought] JB and Jei needed to go out. I don’t know, it was a little unclear,” says Seung Ah. “If you look at it one way, I was hurt because I mean, still, we went on a date together before.”

Awkward conversation ensues in JB and Seung Ah’s car before we cut to a scene from later that night, when the idols are apparently given time to talk honestly with one another in private.

JB stumbles over his thoughts as he says to Seung Ah, “I called you in because…what I wanted to say is, um…to be honest, what do you think of me?”

“I think that I want things to work out,” says Seung Ah.

“To me, you’re a good nuna. I’m just really sorry. Because I know you have good thoughts, but I’m sorry,” says JB.

“Okay, I get it,” says Seung Ah as she gets up, and JB puts his hand awkwardly on her shoulder.

Seung Ah, who is much better at reading situations for what they are, tries to play it cool and says, “Oh no, not at all, it’s not like that at all.”

We can’t help but feel bad for Seung Ah, who seems to really be putting herself out there for JB despite picking up on his true feelings.

So we assume the rest of JB and Seung Ah’s date doesn’t get any better, and our attention turns to Jun.K and Hyejeong, who are deeply engrossed in each other’s hands.

Cue the daksal.

Jun.K and Hyejeong then each take turns asking each other three questions, all while recording each other’s answers. Because it’s not like their date isn’t being recorded for the world to see.

“What’s your ideal type?” asks Jun.K.

“Someone who loves me, someone with a sense of humor, someone innocent,” says Hyejeong.

“That’s basically me,” says Jun.K.

But the daksal doesn’t end there as the two begin feeding each other spoonfuls of patbingsu. But we barely notice because we’re drooling over the big bowl of patbingsu.

Jun.K then receives a message regarding the couple’s next mission, which is for the boy to give the girl a back hug. And it’s Hyun Bin and Ha Ji Won from Secret Garden to the rescue to show the couples how it’s done.

Jun.K and Hyejeong can’t hide their embarrassment as we switch over to Hyung Sik and Ji Hyun who are watching the same clip with embarrassed smiles.

Hyung Sik and Ji Hyun accept the mission and walk off, as Hyung Sik grabs Ji Hyun’s arm.

“You keep [trying to] do skinship like this,” says Ji Hyun, and Hyung Sik responds, “No, this is me taking care of you.”

The couple continues on its romantic date, taking a stroll through the field of grass, hand-in-hand.

“Should we do the mission now?” asks Hyung Sik?

Way to make the mission feel like a mission, Hyung Sik.

Ji Hyun, who has already pulled her hair out of the way, is all set to go.

Hyung Sik places his hand behind her back, and we can totally see his mind racing as he tries to figure out how to ease into the back hug until he finally gives up and says with a laugh, “What do I do!”

The two share an awkward laugh and decide to walk it off. Cue some background music to make the moment less awkward, and soon enough, we see Hyung Sik come up behind Ji Hyun as Ji Hyun tenses up. And the music cuts—it’s literally silent, dead air—as the scene of the couple slipping into the back hug rolls in slow motion. Success!

Mir and Jei receive the same mission, and Mir turns bright red while watching the clip.

This couple treats the back hug like a mission as well, planning how they will accomplish it.

“If I had been with Seung Ah nuna or Hyejeong for this mission, I would’ve just been like ‘Let’s just do it now,’ but I hesitated [with Jei],” says Mir.

The two exchange “This is my first time doing this” comments before the camera pans to their feet and the couple takes off on the mission.

Mir and Jei stroll down a small bridge, and Jei appears surprisingly at ease, even placing her hands on Mir’s arms. All the while, Mir is smiling widely.

“I thought it was really romantic,” says Mir during his interview, unable to look directly at the camera.

During her interview, Jei immediately breaks into a laugh thinking about the mission before saying, “If we had been more comfortable with each other, I wouldn’t have been nervous at all, but it was kind of awkward.”

Well, we couldn’t tell.

“Because there was that, I think [that] made my heart flutter,” adds Jei.

And Mir is officially out of “younger brother” territory.

We’re back in the car with Mir and Jei, where Mir plays her a song he composed, and Jei says she didn’t expect him to have this side to him.

The two go to a museum, where Mir appears to have warmed up to Jei a little more, even saying “Nuna, take care of me,” and Jei offers him her hand, which he, of course, takes gladly.

“Hyejeong was a dongseng and Seung Ah nuna felt too much like a nuna,” reveals Mir in his interview. “That’s why I always said I wanted to taste feeling nervous, and I felt that today. That’s why I’m going crazy.”

“I don’t think I can’t watch this when it airs,” adds Mir as the staff members break into laughter.

“We started holding hands and kept walking around like that,” says Jei. “That was a big moment for me.”

“I can’t throw my interview from this morning away from my memory,” says Jei. “But really, I’m a little weird right now, and I feel like I’m being carried along somewhere.”

The clip of Jei saying she hopes Mir doesn’t pick her shirt rolls back, and Jei says, “I can’t guarantee anything anymore. Now I’m really afraid of my own mouth.”

“My family members—my mother, father and nuna—always say if they were girls, not family, and they met me, they would never date me. My family says this to me all the time. Even my grandmother—she says, ‘If I were young, 22 years old, I would never date you,” says Mir. “That’s how it is. But if my family members see this, they’re going to be shocked. This program made me crazy.”

Meanwhile, the Denim Daksal couple is back in the car, where Jun.K pulls out all of the daksal stops from Jun.K helping Hyejeong put her seatbelt on to Jun.K hinting that his “shoulder hurts” and reaching over to recline her seat and telling her to sleep when she says she’s tired.

Jun.K has seen one too many Korean dramas, but Hyejeong seems to be taking it all in.

The couple takes off on their horseback riding date, and it’s time for the two to complete the back hug mission.

Although Hyejeong can’t hide her embarrassment at first, Jun.K and Hyejeong get bold and even film the back hug moment themselves.

The two complete the mission successfully, but during their respective interviews Jun.K and Hyejeong express their embarrassment recalling the moment.

“So there’s a good kind of feeling embarrassed and then there’s feeling embarrassed because it’s actually embarrassing,” says Jun.K causing the staff members to laugh. “You know what I mean, right? It was embarrassing because it was actually embarrassing. That’s why I’m not sure about Hyejeong’s heart.”

Back in Huung Sik and Ji Hyun’s car, the two are talking about how they’ve spent so much time together (and want to spend more time together) before hopping on a boat and taking photos together.

It’s a completely different story with the JB and Seung Ah couple, as JB literally makes a beeline upon receiving the back hug mission.

Seung Ah tries to play it off, telling JB “Don’t feel burdened by it. Just forget it.”

“I couldn’t do it,” says JB. “I already felt bad, and doing it [the back hug] seemed weird, I couldn’t do it. She’s not the one inside my heart, so doing a mission like that was a little…I couldn’t do it.”

Seung Ah leaves the decision up to JB, saying they can do it or not do it.

JB ultimately opts out of the mission, saying “Let’s give up on hugging.”

“It’s okay. Just forget about it,” says Seung Ah, trying to keep her cool in front of him.

JB explains why he decided to give up on the mission, saying, “To be honest, I’m really sorry to Seung Ah nuna, but I could only think about Jei nuna. I’m really worried about Jei nuna. But there’s nothing I can do about it because there’s only one person on my mind.”

Meanwhile, Seung Ah says in her interview, “When I was JB, even though we were together, I felt like he was thinking about someone else. When we were together, I felt lonely for some reason.”

Unable to hold back tears, Seung Ah continues, “So it was really cold yesterday, honestly. I was hurt seeing him not pay any attention to me. And I think every little thing turned into something hurtful.”

Thoughts:

So back hugs were the couples′ mission this week, but not everyone was feeling the warmth.

It′s not just fun and games on the island anymore, as idol can′t deny their true feelings for one another, causing some to get hurt in the process.

Still, we′re suprised by how much the idols have let their guards down in the last few days (remember they′re only on the island for three nights, four days).

Seung Ah, in particular, has been shafted into "nice nuna" territory, a point Mir and JB continue to drive home, and it′s clearly getting to her.

Meanwhile, Jei strikes again, but this time, it′s Mir who gets caught in her web.

We didn′t expect the tide to change so late in the game, but we′re definitely interested to see what comes of these sharp turns.

Here′s what′s ahead in the next episode!
